How to Make a Good Impression on Your First Day at Work

The first day at work can be scary and stressful or joyful and inspiring. Everything lies deep in your attitude to yourself and the working process. The fact that your first days can indicate, whether you’ll be successful at your new place, is undeniable. Don’t underestimate the first impressions. In this article, we touch upon the two main issues: your appearances and your attitude. Our tips are to help you start building the network at you new job immediately.

Choose Clothes Right
A company with a standard dress-code sets strict boundaries and gives you a certain freedom at the same time. On the one hand, you can wear only the things that are allowed. On the other hand, as it has been pointed by many researchers, picking clothes in the morning, food in the supermarket, or a movie to watch, is as stressful as making the most important decision in your life. That is why dress-coded companies make the lives of their employees much easier. If you don’t work in such a company, the clothes issue may cause some difficulties for you, especially on your first day. So, mind the general rules:

Don’t Wear Too Bright Clothes
Even if it is allowed. Some colors can provoke aggression on the subconscious level. This is not what you want on your first day at work.

People Still Judge ‘Books by the Covers’
Although many try to be as tolerant as possible, the majority of people still do. It doesn’t mean you have to wear all your ‘best’ clothes at once, though. You can’t be good for anyone, but being tidy and stylish will win you some points.

Wear Things that Match
This says a lot about your sense of style and the right perception of yourself.

Dress for a Place You Work In
In some places, like offices, jeans are not acceptable; in others, like barbershops or certain type of workshops, there is nothing better to wear.

Stay Comfortable
It concerns any type of clothes. Even wearing a fancy suit doesn’t mean you have to feel like you’re not quite yourself. Pick the clothes that suit you exactly, both physically and emotionally.

Don’t Focus on Appearances Too Much
If you mind the occasion and try to look tidy, this will be enough for your clothes to provide a good impression. Don’t pay attention to it in conversations, of course.

Be open to others
The preparation for the first day at a new office is not limited to picking what to wear. A lot of work has to be done in your own mind. The problems with communication usually come from within. The general rules here are as follows:

Forget the Fear
Don’t be afraid of your first day and especially of people at your new work. You can be a little worried, of course, but the excitement should considerably prevail. This is a new job, after all! A new step for you!

Work on Your Handshake and Voice
The best impression you can make is being confident, but not arrogant. Your handshake has to be steady, as well as your voice. If you speak too loud when you’re nervous, struggle with this habit! People usually don’t like it.

Be Friendly
Usually, it means smile. In other cultures, however, constant smiling can be taken differently. Mind this, if you work for an international company. But friendliness is the most universal thing, with or without smiling. There are plenty of ways to show that you are:

open for communication;
not here only for your personal gain;
not a threat (to someone’s high position, for example).

Listen to Others
Anything they say. If it has something to do with the job, it can be useful for you. If some of your new coworkers like to tell about their personal lives, you are still better to listen. First, it’s not quite polite to interrupt. Secondly, it will help you to understand them better. And it will be easier to find some common grounds.

Mind What You Say
Remember that a working place is not the best one for intimate conversations. So, don’t say too much about your private life, health, love experiences, etc. You can discuss it with your colleagues later when you get to know them better. Besides. Don’t say mean things about the others. Subconsciously, people have negative emotions towards those who say negative things.

Be Ready to Learn
You don’t just have to make an impression of a person ready to learn continuously. You really have to absorb the information concerning your working process and your company’s activities. Today, no one needs people who work like robots. We do have robots. Now the curious, creative and talented are in demand. So, develop these skills each day.

Making a good impression on your coworkers is not a hard task. You have to know who you are, why you are here, mind some general rules we’ve mentioned – and you’ll do just fine!
