Relevent Country: Ethiopia

Leverist.de is seeking applications for Agricultural Innovations for the Green Innovation Centre that Benefit from this large-scale development aid project.

They want to achieve these sustainable development goals:

Zero Hunger.
The Business Opportunity

The Ethiopian economy has grown by an average of 10.7 % per year over the last ten years. This is more than twice as much as the sub-Saharan African average over the same period (5.1 %). At the same time, agriculture accounts for 41 percent of Ethiopia’s gross domestic product. However, the majority of agricultural producers, especially small farmers, lack the knowledge of modern and sustainable farming methods that maintain their livelihoods in the long term and thus secure their income.
To address this problem, the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development has set up green innovation centres for German development cooperation in 14 partner countries as part of the special initiative “One World – No Hunger”.
In order to be able to implement corresponding innovations in the agricultural and food sector in the selected rural regions, they are looking for European companies for long-term partnerships and for business relationships that are lucrative for both sides!
Funding Information
The BMZ will provide a total of EUR 277.7 million for this project until March 2022. The overarching objective of the “Green Innovation Centres for the Agro-Food Sector” project in Ethiopia is also to improve the harvest yields of small farmers (especially in wheat and factory bean production), to increase farmers’ incomes and employment rates and to expand regional food supplies.
How your contribution to development cooperation works

Those who grow most of the world’s food often do not have enough to eat. Although hunger in developing countries has been reduced by almost a third since 2000, one in nine people worldwide still suffers from hunger. More than half of them are small farmers.
The harvests are often not even sufficient to guarantee the own family a sufficient nutrition. In addition, a large proportion of food spoils on its way from the field to the end consumer, as storage, processing and trade do not go hand in hand. They want to remedy this situation – together with companies that see challenges as market opportunities and enter into lucrative partnerships on both sides!
Geographic Context

Although the Ethiopian economy is growing steadily and absolute poverty has been significantly reduced in recent years through development aid and government programmes, almost a third of the people living there are undernourished. And this despite the fact that Ethiopia has the natural conditions to produce enough food for its entire population.
Large parts of Ethiopia have very favourable climatic conditions for agricultural production, but disease-prone seeds, tillage with the simplest tools and manual grain harvesting mean that farmers harvest only a fraction of what would be possible under more favourable conditions. The aim is to improve this situation, particularly in the cultivation of wheat and beans. Great challenges for us – possibly a future market for European companies that want to become active here and participate in the “Green Innovation Centres” project!
