Under the overall authority of the Assistant Director-General for Culture (ADG/CLT), the general supervision of the Chief of the Living Heritage Entity and the direct supervision of the Head of the Capacity Building and Heritage Policy Unit, the incumbent will contribute to the development, management and monitoring of activities and projects related to intangible cultural heritage, in the framework of the implementation of the 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (hereafter ‘the Convention). The Associate Project Officer will focus on strengthening the Living heritage and education programme and the Global capacity-building programme for safeguarding living heritage for sustainable development, and also support the integration of living heritage in thematic programmes, including within sustainable development plans and frameworks, in line with the 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage.

In particular, the incumbent will:

  • Contribute to the living heritage and education programme by assisting with the global programme coordination and development, identifying new projects and activities, developing concept notes and proposals, reviewing documents, providing technical support to project elaboration and the identification of potential financing partners, and liaising with the Education Sector on joint programme activities. In addition, assist with the development and maintenance of the Programme’s Clearinghouse. Collect and consolidate data required to monitor action at the country level for reporting in the context of statutory meetings of the 2003 Convention and Regular Programme reporting, as well as drafting related inputs and contributions in a timely manner.
  • Assist with the development of the online learning platform of the capacity-building programme on living heritage and sustainable development by coordinating the planning and monitoring, participating in the work of content updating, development and production, ensuring coherence of formats, design and alignment with UNESCO's rules and regulations; organizing translation, editing, proofreading, copy-editing and lay outing of the course content in different languages, including assistance with the related administrative and contractual procedures and the process tracking tools.
  • Facilitate the planning, implementation, monitoring and reporting of programmes, projects and activities undertaken by the Capacity-Building and Heritage Policy Unit in the Living Heritage Entity to support Member States to develop or revise policies, strategies and programmes to safeguard living heritage, including within sustainable development plans and frameworks, in line with the 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage.
  • Assist with programme communication by regularly updating the content on the web pages of the priority programmes managed by the Capacity Building and Heritage Policy unit, including the information related to the use of the Learning platform for capacity building, and inform the users; accordingly, liaise with the knowledge manager of the Living Heritage Entity as required.

Required Qualifications:

Education:

  • Advanced University degree (Masters or equivalent) required in culture, anthropology, linguistics, indigenous studies or in the social or human sciences, closely related to intangible cultural heritage or a related discipline.

Work Experience:

  • Minimum of two (2) years of relevant professional experience in culture and/or safeguarding intangible cultural heritage or a related area, of which preferably one (1) year acquired at international level.

Skills:

  • Knowledge of programme/project management in the field of living heritage or a related field.
  • Ability to collect, synthesise and analyse information from various sources.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with proven ability to edit and draft clearly and concisely.
  • Excellent coordination and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to manage a heavy workload and meet tight deadlines, paying attention to detail and quality of work.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within a multi-cultural environment and to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Good IT skills, including knowledge of MS software (Word, Excel etc.).

Languages:

  • Excellent knowledge of either English or French and good knowledge of the other working language.
