The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks to recruit a Deputy Director General - Research and Development Biosciences to lead the implementation of the institute's research strategy by providing scientific leadership ensuring alignment of research programs within the directorate and the institute's overall strategy and objectives.
Key Responsibilities:
Scientific leadership:
As a member of the institute’s senior management team, provide outstanding scientific leadership that puts ILRI’s research at the forefront of livestock research for development; motivate and supervise scientific teams; ensure research is aligned with ILRI’s strategy and the One CGIAR Research and Innovation Strategy.
Institutional relevance:
Ensure maximum salience of ILRI’s bioscience (Animal and Human Health) research activities to development challenges and target beneficiaries; coordinate the centre’s biosciences (Animal and Human Health) research so that it has internal coherence and contributes significantly to the Initiatives under the One CGIAR from January 2022.
Research strategy:
Working closely with the DDG-Integrated Sciences and the DDG Biosciences (Genetics and Feeds), to implement and operationalize ILRI’s strategy to 2022; the DDG-Biosciences (Animal and Human Health) also works closely with the Assistant Director General for Planning and Partnerships as well as with the Chief Operations Officer and Director-People and Organizational Development to ensure that internal processes and systems are fit for the purpose of delivering on ILRI’s mission.
External representation:
Productively engage key ILRI stakeholders at national, regional and international fora; persuasively articulate the rationale for livestock biosciences (Animal and Human Health) research for development (e.g. its roles, innovations and impacts) and the unique position of ILRI’s teams and facilities in using livestock biosciences to meet development goals.
Partnerships and communications:
Strengthen ILRI bioscience (Animal and Human Health) research by fostering partnerships with leading Private and Public bioscience research teams globally.
Staff supervision:
Supervise, motivate and lead ILRI’s bioscience (Animal and Human Health) leaders, ensuring that teams across biosciences and integrated sciences work together towards a common purpose.
Resource mobilization:
Contribute substantially to designing and executing the centre’s resource mobilization strategy, including building good donor relations, generating new initiatives, raising funds, monitoring funding needs and gaps, and overseeing development of funding proposals with a view to increasing the proportion of biosciences research in ILRI.
