The Sustainable Impact through Rice-based Systems Platform (SIRS) drives IRRI’s strategic vision by identifying strategic research to meet current and future needs and opportunities, fosters multi- and inter-disciplinary research amongst IRRI scientists and partners, and maps out plausible impact pathways leading to outcomes and impact. Within the SIRS Platform, the Digital Tools and Big Data Research Unit develops and maintains accessible digital applications and decision-support tools to improve rice research, production, and agri-food systems.

Under the general supervision of the Lead Programmer, the Software Engineer will design, develop, maintain, test, update and evaluate software applications for improved farmer-oriented crop management and services in rice-based systems. Support in the creation, analysis, and evaluation of product requirements. Carry out software development tasks within the agreed time frame and according to the set best practices and agreed principles. Conduct user demonstrations and technical training when needed.

This position will be based at the IRRI India Office in Odisha and will only be filled in by permanent citizens of India

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Recommend, perform enhancements, and add components on an existing web and mobile phone-based application that would aid in the effective and efficient gathering of farmer-farm lot information registry in rice-based systems.
  • Create, maintain, and manage databases and ensure data quality through thorough, timely, and consistent data cleaning and validation.
  • In new software development, be involved in the creation of software requirements and actual software development according to set best practices and agreed principles.
  • Work internally with the team of app developer and technical staff (HQ and India CO) to support in the creation, analysis, and evaluation of product requirements.
  • Contribute to the sprint planning and sprint retrospective that is regularly implemented by the app developers every sprint cycle.
  • Conduct user demonstrations and usability testing to facilitate gathering of user feedback and inputs for potential iterations in the app development process.
  • Support the team in capacity building, technical training, and field troubleshooting to project partners, trainers and implementers for efficient knowledge-transfer
  • Carry out software development tasks within the agreed time frame and according to the set best practices and agreed principles.
  • Enhance software (existing and under development) based on gathered feedback and approved upgrades for a more efficient use
  • Create and update the required user and technical documentation.
  • Provide technical support to storage, analysis, and retrieval of data.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science with a minimum 3 years of work experience in developing software applications using Angular Framework and PHP 7, and in developing API (REST) for system interoperability; or
  • Master’s degree in Computer Science with a minimum 1 year of relevant work experience in developing software applications using Angular Framework and PHP 7, and in developing API (REST) for system interoperability

Skills Required

Mandatory

  • Web and mobile application development using modern JavaScript front-end and back-end frameworks (Node JS, MongoDB, Express, Angular, PHP, MySQL)
  • Proficient in working with REST/RESTful APIs for system interoperability
  • Proficient in implementing data models to relational databases

Preferred

  • Has experience in Agile software development methodology (Scrum)
  • Knowledgeable in using Docker technology and Github platform for source code repository, version control, and backup
  • Has some knowledge in testing frameworks (Karma, Jasmine, php unit)
