The project manager reports to the MSF platform of the directors of communications (Dircom5) via the international communications coordinator.

The position can be hosted in any MSF office.

The project manager will liaise regularly with the senior audiovisual adviser in charge of the media database review, as the internal and external initiatives are closely linked.

Regular interaction is expected with people in charge of audiovisual content production throughout the movement, particularly with those working with the MSF operational centres.

The project manager will:

  • Lead and coordinate MSF’s engagement with photo agencies to restrict the circulation of sensitive imagery involving people who have received care at MSF medical and humanitarian projects
  • Help develop agreed standards and a systematic process for MSF to flag sensitive imagery to external photo agencies
  • Recommend contractual terms and language to include in agreements with freelancers and/or agencies, with support from MSF’s audiovisual and legal teams
  • The review of the MSF media database will continue to be managed by the senior audiovisual adviser from the MSF International Office’s communication team (IO Comms).

Main Responsibilities:

  • Identify the main external photo agencies holding substantial numbers of images involving MSF projects and people seeking or receiving care from MSF
  • Liaise with the senior audiovisual adviser and media database review project to identify images and photo collections of concern held by external agencies, including those reported via social media and email (avreporting@msf.org)
  • Lead and coordinate engagement with photo agencies and individual photographers to restrict access to sensitive imagery involving MSF
  • Define a process or strategy for ongoing monitoring and follow-up with external photo agencies
  • Identify and recommend best practices for audiovisual contracts; develop sample templates, with support from the MSF international legal department and audiovisual teams
  • Compile resources to support learning and development on photo ethics and visual storytelling
  • Support the review of MSF’s Content Production Guidelines through internal and external consultations (time permitting)

Qualifications, Experience & Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience in photography, visual arts, or mass communications
  • At least 3-5 years' experience working as a photo researcher, visual editor/curator, or similar position
  • Sound editorial judgment, understanding of visual representation issues, and respect for principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Experience with copyright, legal, and ethical issues related to visual media
  • Proven experience interacting with photo agencies/photographers and understanding of the international photojournalism sector
  • Firsthand experience in AV production in medical and humanitarian contexts is an asset
  • Experience in project management.
