Under supervision of the Senior Scientist and Sr. Associate Scientist, this position will contribute to proper implementation of protocols for phenotyping and genotyping screening of germplasm materials. Facilitate the development of crosses, field and greenhouse experiments, facilitate the designing and implementation of all experiments and other research-related activities. The main objective is to coordinate within IRRI and within the group to ensure efficient sample processing and well-managed phenotyping, screen house experiments and field trials.

This position will be based at the IRRI Headquarters, Los Baños, Philippines and may only be filled by permanent citizens of the Philippines.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Contribute to managing field and greenhouse trials, request appropriate farm operations to carry out the trials, and coordinate staff
  • Under the guidance of Senior Scientist, facilitate the designing and implementation of all experiments and other research-related activities
  • Communicate with internal partners and collaborators to exchange conceptual ideas and to effectively gather feedback for the advancement of assigned projects
  • Advise research activities improvement that are beneficial to the experiment
  • Work closely with research technicians in order to maintain smooth conduct of field and greenhouse experiments, data compilation, as well as to foster a productive working environment
  • Coordinate with required IRRI units for supplies and other services to ensure smooth implementation of experiments
  • Provide support in the implementation of field and greenhouse experiments and other research studies
  • Collect and analyze research data and contribute to the writing of manuscripts for reports/publications as well as presentations/posters for national and international conferences
  • Administer effective coordination and preparation of trainings by ensuring that materials, logistics and resource persons are appropriate to the defined objectives
  • Maintain accurate data recording and update database for efficient storage and retrieval of information
  • Prepare and submit research outputs to the Scientist in a timely manner
  • Assist in developing Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) with guidance of the Scientist

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture or Botany major in Seed Technology or related discipline and 2 years of relevant work experience in rice research

Skills Required

  • Has proven technical proficiency in conducting field, screenhouse and laboratory experiments
  • Has good oral and written communication skills
  • Has good presentation skills
  • Is able to work independently or minimal supervision
