The Financial Institutions Group, one of IFC’s industry departments, supports projects in numerous financial subsectors, partners with local financial institutions, develops domestic and regional equity and debt markets and introduces new financing instruments. The goal is to develop efficient financial systems that will increase financial inclusion and fuel economic growth in client countries and enhance IFC’s developmental impact. 

The Financial Institutions Group is recruiting a Senior Investment Officer to join the Investment and Portfolio Team, which originates, manages and monitors IFC’s financial sector investments in North Africa and the Horn of Africa. The Senior Investment Officer will report to the Financial Institutions Group Manager, Investment, North Africa, and the Horn of Africa.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead origination initiatives for new investments in Egypt and the broader region, in close collaboration with regional teams, advisory services, upstream, and other WBG stakeholders.
  • Handle client relationships and develop client engagements in Egypt across short term, long term, and capital to anticipate new investment opportunities and/or performance issues.
  • Regulatory and market insights.
  • Liaise with internal and external specialists to develop an impact investment strategy for the relevant counterparts, including in climate finance, SME finance, etc.
  • Identify and analyze fundamental competitive strengths and weaknesses of investment opportunities or portfolio companies and identify financial and non-financial issues, opportunities, and risk/reward factors (e.g., business environment, country, and sponsor).
  • Operate as a key member of investment projects execution, including due diligence.
  • Evaluate, structure, negotiate, and close new transactions, portfolio restructurings, rescheduling, capital increases, equity sales, etc.
  • Contribute directly to documentation of new projects; use strong negotiation skills to develop solutions and overcome impasses in straightforward and complex transactions.
  • Closely manage project teams and other staff in the FIG Investment team, including mentoring and developing junior staff.
  • Coordinate closely with social, environmental, and advisory colleagues to add value to our clients' businesses and achieve sustainable development impact.

Selection Criteria

  • MBA or equivalent qualification.
  • A minimum of 13 years of relevant experience covering the financial sector, preferably in an investment related function.
  • Relevant experience as a team lead, on mentoring and developing staff.
  • Proven ability to share and grow knowledge with peers and juniors.
  • Excellent understanding of financial and operational characteristics of financial institutions.
  • Detailed understanding of regulatory frameworks across financial regulations and market regulations.
  • Strong financial and credit skills and demonstrated ability to structure a variety of complex financial instruments (debt and equity).
  • Experience in emerging markets.
  • Sound client relationship skills, track record and ability to focus on client needs and deliver transactions.
  • Sound business judgment and strong problem solving/negotiation skills, as well as ability to work effectively on simultaneous projects under time pressure.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English; French and / or Arabic a significant plus.
  • Genuine interest in development finance and working in a multicultural environment.
